Weathering

So I've been playing around with different weathering effects on models recently and decided to post up my second attempt at a different style of weathering. There are so many different types of styles and methods and I can not say that any one is better than another. I guess you would use a particular style depending on what feel at the moment for the model and then stick with it for the entire army.

In an earlier post I had posted an article about painting yellow and using the Forgeworld pigments to create rust (or other weathering textures) using diluted pigment powder. I first blended the armor plates with highlights and shadows, then powdered up the edges were rust and grit would settle. Then I would wash over the model with water which would dilute the powder and let it run into the cracks.

Well, with my second attempt I decided to try something completely different. First off, I can not take credit for this method as I watched a tutorial on how to do it. And the person that presented the tutorial is none other than....Slayer Sword winner Todd Swanson. The tutorial went over the exact steps and methods that were used to achieve the dirty, battle torn, rusty armor plates that he used on 'Festus'. After watching his tutorial vid, I was so pumped up to give it a try. So I picked up the nearest model I had, which happened to be a Imperial Fist Dreadnought that was a WIP and threw some paint on it.

Though this is only my first take at it, I'm sure that I can dilute the paints a bit more and create a much better transition between the drips of rust. I was kind of anxious to see the outcome and painted a bit thicker than I wanted.

Blood Angels Storm Raven II

So I haven't been able to get much of the Storm Raven done, but I was able to assemble the hull and tail piece. I painted the model Mechrite Red and started to work on blending in the Blood Red (front of the model). Will get more pics up soon.

Blood Angels Storm Raven I

So I started to put the model together and just decided that I wanted to paint the interior of the Storm Raven before I assembled it. Although the interior of the model will not be seen as much and does not need alot of detail work, I decided to do a little bit of blending and highlighting just to spice it up a bit.

I first base coated the model with Mechrite Red and painted the seats with Calthan Brown and any of the radar screens with the desired color of choice. (This side is yet to be finished, but I painted the radar green. The other side is painted with blue screens.)

Once I put the base coats on, I then went ahead and painted Blood Red to all the edges that I wanted highlighted along with Enchanted Blue for the screens. I then blended in some Necron Abyss to the lower right of the screens.

Then I hightlighted the red armor with Blazing Orange blending followed up by a very tiny bit of line highlighting using Golden Yellow.

I haven't finished the model yet with the next steps, but the next step is to wash with Baal Red Wash followed up with some addition highlighting and blending.

More to come soon!

Heroes of Armageddon: Blood Angels Part I

As I posted in an earlier post, there are a number of painters getting together to put together four 3,000 point armies for the 'Heroes of Armageddon' project. Each of the four armies was designated a team leader to pick and choose their party members.

I was one of the lucky few chosen by team JAWA, aka Blood Angels. So over the next few weeks, or until the project is finished, I will be posting up any progress of the units that I am assigned. I will be building and painting up an assault squad, furioso dreadnought, and a storm raven. So keep an eye out on my blog for these updates.

For more information about what the 'Heroes of Armageddon' is, please click the link to see what it is all about. And if you feel like you want to support the cause, check out the top right of my blog or any of the other bloggers that are a part of this cause to contribute. For every dollar you spend will give you a chance to win one of the four armies that are under construction.

Just got my order in today from SpikeyBits

Painting Yellow Marines

So I have been trying to paint yellow without making it look so clumpy with layers upon layers of paint. I've tried different base coats to start ranging from black, white, Iyanden Darksun, and even Tausept Ochre. To my surprise I found the the Tausept Ochre was the best starting point after priming white. I painted a very watered down layer (roughly 2:1 water:paint). Once dried, I painted another watered down layer (roughly 1:1 water:paint) and let it sit until it dried.

Afterwards, I painted on a very thin layer of Iyanden Darksun 1:1 mix going against the raised edges of the armor. This part wasn't important of making sure that the recess was darker, but to ensure that I had an even coat throughout the miniature. This would be for a much more reasonable base color for the next yellow to be painted over without having to clump on layers upon layers of paint.

The next step was to paint the model using Sunburst Yellow, making sure to paint carefully around the edges of armor plates and recess areas allowing the darker colors to show a bit. At first I wasn't too sure about this because the overall model came out so bright. I knew that I was going to give the marine a wash of some darker paints, but just wasn't sure of myself.

Instead of washing the model with a GW wash or a very diluted paint to water mixture, I tried something different. I had recently purchased the weathering powder from Forge World and wanted to give it a shot. I put some Orange Rust on the edges and recesses of the marine (not too heavy, just a dab here and there). I took a clean brush, dipped it in some water and then started to feather the water into the powder. I feathered the water:powder mixture towards the middle of the armor plates and let it sit to dry.

Once the model was dry, the bright yellow marine had turned into a more rich yellow. With weathering in the recesses. The perfect yellow for my taste when painting Imperial Fists, or other yellow stuff :P I havn't finished the model yet, but once I finish the entire model/squad, I will post it up for all to see.

Hope this tip helps anyone who gives it a try!

Heroes of Armageddon - More Info!

Ok, so some of you may have already seen what the 'Heroes of Armageddon' is about, but in case you haven't...

WHAT IS IT ABOUT
It is a crazy idea brought to our attention by John & Mike over at Santa Cruz Warhammer, but for an awesome cause.

The charity build is going to depict the 3rd battle of Armageddon where there will be four 3,000 point armies built, then given away at this year's Games Day in Chicago!!! *(more on how you can win an amazing army below)

The following armies along with the team leaders for each army are as follows:

Steel Legion - Dave Taylor
Blood Angels - Jawaballs
Speed Freaks - Goatboy (BOLS)

Each team leader will be responsible for the building and painting execution of their armies. So check out their blogs.

THE GOOD CAUSE
The charity is being run for an organization called 'Doctors without Borders'. All the money that is being raised will be sent to this organization for basically helping others that are in need all over the world.

HOW TO WIN AN ARMY
Basically all you have to do is support to the charity fund. You can see the 'Contribution' tab on the top right of my blog or any other supporters of this event. For each dollar you will win a chance at winning one of the four armies. Supporting $10 will buy yourself 10 chances and so on. The supports will be accepted until July (will post the date as it gets closer) and then four names will be chosen. Those four people will be the lucky winners of an amazing army giveaway brought to you by some amazing people.

You can find more info on the main page: http://heroesofarmageddon.blogspot.com

As always, there will be more to come soon!
