I always struggle getting enough contra...Hi Micho,

I always struggle getting enough contrast and "pop" and have been working on it a lot recently, so feel well placed to have this desicussion :)

one thing I have found really helps is using a wet palette, not because of its paint presernving properties per se, but because that means i can set out the whole palette i intend to use for the blend at the start,

I set a dark point, and a bright point and several internediary steps, and work my way through them.

now you have one added difficulty - you're using red. and blending and highlightind red well it's easy to accidentally make pink.

I'd suggest starting quite dark, maybe with scortched brown with some red in it, working up to your red, then start adding orange as a highlight colour, then a good strong yellow, like maybe iyanded, with a final highlight for specularity of just white, with no red at all.

But i'm sure there's a lot of people more qualified than me around the net with red recepies,

one thing i will say is dont lose faith, sometimes it's not untill that final bright highlight goes on that it pops, then it just all comes together. theres always a mid point where it looks a mess and you want to start over.. push through it :)Karitashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06811166981334472345noreply@blogger.com
